Halabja is a town about 70 km from Suleymaniya, towards the East, and near the Iranian border.
In 1988, during Saddam's reign, the Iraqi government started the "Anfal" Campaign, aimed at eradicating the Kurdish people in the North. During the 9 months of this military action, more then 180,000 Kurdish people were killed and many more disappeared.
The Iraqi Airforce bombed several times with chemicals to destroy whole regions in the course of a morning. Halabja is the most written about. During the bombing of Halabja, more then 5,000 people were killed by the chemicals, and 20,000 injured.
Halabja still shows the scars of that attack.
The pictures are from several monuments in memorial of that infamous day.
